“At Safway, safety is our No. 1 value,” says Paul Amedee, vice president of environmental health and safety at Safway. “Over the last year, we reduced our incident rate by 22 percent, and we are committed to continuous improvement both within our company and throughout our industry. Everyone at Safway has the responsibility to their families, co-workers and the company by owning safety and being committed to always working and acting safely.”
Safway has developed what it calls the “Five Key Principles” of owning safety, which the company plan to focus on during the Safety Week stand-down:
1. Employee Ownership and Responsibility
All employees must take ownership and responsibility for themselves, co-workers, contractors and customers. Everyone on a work site has to own safety every minute of every day.
2. Stop Work Authority
Stopping a job to ensure safety is a requirement for everyone, anytime, anywhere. All employees have the authority to – and are expected to – stop the work whenever they believe a situation exists where any person, equipment and/or the environment are at risk.
3. Intervention and Coaching
Intervention and coaching must take place at all levels in the company. Safety conversations should be occurring daily among employees.
4.Feedback and Responding to Employees
When someone provides feedback, suggestions, ideas or requests, it is important to be open-minded. Timely feedback is the most effective feedback, and continuous communication helps to foster openness, trust, understanding and improvement.
To truly own safety, each employee must hold him or herself, and others, accountable for their behaviors and actions.
OSHA has partnered with several key groups to assist with this year’s annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, including the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), OSHA approved State Plans, State consultation programs, the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the National Safety Council, the National Construction Safety Executives (NCSE), the U.S. Air Force and the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers.
